Be fearless

Crimestoppers follow up on their burglary campaign with a focus on drugs.

While some lower level crimes may not be widely known or affect the community directly, they can be key to funding more serious crimes and it is exactly this that Crimestoppers are trying to prevent.

Following on from their recent campaign tackling burglary, the charity is appealing to the communities within Leicester to help eliminate the issue of drugs in the city.

Between April and September this year, Crimestoppers has taken almost 300 calls concerning drug trafficking and supply. This has resulted in 16 arrests in the Leicestershire area while a further eight arrests have been made thanks to information from the public in relation to the manufacturing of drugs.

Crimestoppers and its youth brand Fearless have held events to raise awareness while also appealing to the public to pass on any information they might have on this issue.

Highfields Got Talent, a talent show for the Highfields area of Leicester saw young people show off their skills in front of a judging panel, as they wooed members of the audience who had come to cheer them on.

Youngsters from Leicester and the surrounding parts of the city were also invited to a basketball tournament during half term which was overseen by former England international player Karl Brown.

Over 60 youngsters between the ages of eight and 18 took part in the three hour 3v3 tournament, which saw them enjoy a free afternoon of activity while also being made aware of the work Crimestoppers and Fearless is carrying out on drugs.

Newly appointed East Midlands regional manager for Crimestoppers, Julie Furnival, said: “We understand the importance of ensuring our streets are free of those dealing in drugs and it is through this campaign that we hope the public will help us fight this crime.

“We are determined to tackle this issue for the sake of the law abiding majority that live in our communities, but we need their help in passing information to us anonymously about those dealing or manufacturing drugs. I would appeal to them to come forward.”
