Jubilee Plans In Full Swing

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mike Kapur, OBE, reveals exciting events planned this summer to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

As June approaches, planning for Leicestershire’s celebrations of the Platinum Jubilee are in full swing.

To celebrate the Jubilee, the Lieutenancy will be issuing 70 Community Awards to successfully nominated groups around Leicester City and the County who have done something exceptional to promote community spirit and encourage us all to come together at this happy time. Myself and my Deputy Lieutenants are looking forward to presenting these unique awards to schools, businesses, voluntary and community groups. Nominations for this will remain open on my website until 29th April, so if you know of an exceptional group please nominate them today!

In May, I am hosting a 70@70 Garden Party at Beaumanor Hall. I very much look forward to speaking with people from across our City and County who are turning 70 in this special year. I will also be making the presentation to the winners of our Children’s Art Competition – all shortlisted entries will be able to be viewed via a virtual gallery on our website.

Many people will be planning their own celebrations during the extended Jubilee weekend, 2nd to 5th June,

which I am keen to hear about. Our Lieutenancy website, www.leicestershire.gov.uk/platinum-jubilee hosts an interactive map for people to register their events, and for members of the public to look up local celebrations. The “Big Lunch” on 5th June is an ideal opportunity to celebrate with friends and neighbours, by holding a street party or simply chatting over a cup of tea.

As we celebrate the first ever Platinum Jubilee, Leicestershire will also be involved with the National celebrations. People across the Country are being encouraged to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Scheme (www. queensgreencanopy.org) which will provide a lasting legacy of Her Majesty’s reign for future generations.

On 2nd June, Beacons will be lit across the County as part of a chain of over 1,500 beacons across the UK. Local communities, parish councils, schools, youth groups, and farming communities can get involved by setting up and lighting beacons, sponsoring beacons, or illuminating a home or building – the National Space Centre will also be lit up. This is a great opportunity

to come together as a community and build lasting memories of this once-in-a-lifetime event.

As we celebrate this momentous milestone for Her Majesty, people across Leicester and Leicestershire can celebrate her reign and experience a feeling of togetherness and to look forward with confidence.

I’m really looking forward to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Let’s show the nation just how proud we are of Her Majesty the Queen.
