When it comes to the beginning of the year it can always feel slightly drab and dreary. January tends not to be a preferred month because everyone has splashed out their pounds on buying Christmas presents. But the month is also when New Year’s Resolutions come into play. So why not make it your resolution to revamp your wardrobe and step into 2013 with some fabulous style?

The year 2012 was a groundbreaking year for fashion with unforgetable collections presented at the London, Paris, Milan and New York fashion weeks, but we also saw a number of high street stores team up with top names to create affordable designer looks.

A retailer you dont want to miss is H&M. The store is due to launch its latest luxury brand titled ‘&Other Stories’ which will feature a collection incorporating ready to wear pieces including masculine tailoring as well as feminine chic. The store has reported that &Other Stories will be full of affordable, up to the moment designs, making it the perfect clothing line to invest in for 2013.

The start of the New Year means it’s time to add some new colours to your wardrobe. Natural colours combined with the idea of a manufactured world are key to being at the top of the style stakes this year. Aubergine and mystic blue as well as teal and winter pastels will be sure to make your outfit an instant hit.

Selfridges’ fashion buyer Sarah Martin from Leicester gives us an insight into her style guide for the forthcoming year. She said: “I really like the idea of colours reflecting the way in which we live at the moment. It’s very relevant to today’s society. There is also a wintery factor to them which is ideal for the colder months like January and February.”

When asked which 2012 trends she hopes to see carried over into 2013, Sarah replied: “Knee-high boots have been a wardrobe staple of mine over the past year. They are a wear-with-anything item of clothing, which makes them very appealing. I’ve also been a big fan of coats with fur trims. They make the wearer feel very sophisticated and work perfectly when teamed with leggings or dresses.

“For 2013 I hope to see new interpretations of maxi skirts. They are the ultimate in smart casual but can sometimes be a bit difficult to wear. It will be helpful to see how they can be worn in more functional ways.”

For men this year, Vogue has reinforced that you should combine vibrant colours with textures and a hint of nostalgia. Intense blue shirts and trousers bring an outfit to life while duck-egg blue trench coats are perfect for the winter weather. Contrastingly, if going all out with bold statement patterns is more your style then the traces of Californian surfer trends are ones to look out for in Spring/Summer 2013.

High tops and chunky boots with laces are wardrobe staples this year. The incorporation of retro and military styles rework classic looks to make them relevant today. There is also evidence of decorative details such as straps with metal buckles and zips. These can be functional or purely there to give the boot added interest and character.

A variety of styles will be available in coats ranging from parkas, straight double-breasted and sports. The important aspect to look out for is length. Depending on the style, men’s coats should be to the waist or just below. This draws attention to the whole outfit and allows what is being worn underneath to be seen when the coat is left undone.
